Dr Laurence Crowley: 2019 Outstanding Contribution to Accountancy

While shortlisted candidates across 14 award categories will have to wait until the night of the Irish Accountancy Awards 2019 gala awards ceremony & dinner on May 16th to find out if they are successful, one trophy recipient has already been named.

We are delighted to announce that Dr. Laurence G. Crowley CBE FCA will be honoured with the inaugural Outstanding Contribution to Accountancy award, sponsored by Chartered Accountants Ireland. Throughout his stellar career Dr. Laurence Crowley has made a significant and positive impact in Irish accountancy, business, education and all island economic ties.

Laurence Crowley qualified as a Chartered Accountant and was, for many years, a Partner in KPMG specialising in corporate advice and insolvency.

In 1990, his focus expanded to leadership roles in prominent business organisations including Governor of the Bank of Ireland, Chairman of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and of P.J. Carroll. A business innovator, Laurence went on hold the role of Director of Aer Lingus, Bord Gáis Eireann, Elan Pharmaceuticals, Rothmans International, New Ireland Assurance, Realex Payments, Hardwicke and Davy Stockbrokers. President McAleese appointed Laurence to be Chairman of Gaisce, the President’s Award. This is a challenge for young people to achieve approved goals and is a reward for and recognition of their efforts. He currently serves as Chairman of Ecocem and Director O’Flaherty Holdings.

Laurence was privileged to be appointed as the first Chairman of the newly founded UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School in 1990 and remains an active member of the Board of the School.

As Chairman of the Centre for Autism, Laurence helped to establish the all-Ireland organisation and continues to support their mission in working with children most affected by the Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families, carers and teachers.

Laurence holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from University College Dublin and is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, Ireland. In 2004, he was conferred with an honorary Doctorate in Laws by the National University of Ireland.

In 2009, he was awarded an Honorary CBE by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for his role in the peace process in Ireland and in fostering relationships between our two nations.

In April 2019 was awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Business Education award by UCD.
